Many people asked a simple question about installing SQL Server 2000 on Windows Vista. And the fact is that until now Vista does not support installing SQL server 2000 or lower version. So this post is beeing dedicated to some how make you SQL 2000 database schemas work on Windows Vista and .NET framework 3.0, People who are running applications with database servers other than SQL Server 2005 should consider evaluating and upgrading to SQL Server 2005, which was designed to take advantage of the upcoming security and performance enhancements in the operating environment. One of the pure Microsoft business strategy to make people buy the latest Microsoft Products. But for sure only SQL 2005 will run on Vista, Here i will only tell you some tips to migrate the 2000 data to 2005 and port them accordingly on Vista, but perhaps some may come up with new products that can make SQL 2000 schema run with ease, but let see .. until now there is no promiss from any one who could say that SQL 200o is supported in Vista. In future if any thing comes then it will be listed here for sure. Others can tell how to migrate the SQL 2000 data to SQL 2005 and make it run in Vista systems.

SQL server 2000 cannot be installed on Vista, as in vista the yukon framework(the next generation SQL server ) is already there.

When i installed Vista on my system i installed SQL server 2000 i was able to do it .. but one of my friend who has already installed Visual Studio 2008 into Vista was not able to install the SQL 2000, this is because a software upgrade is possible i.e. 2005 to 2005 upgrade is possible but its not possible to install SQL server 2000 when you already have SQL server 2005 or 2008 or higher..

So i sincerely advice you to uninstall all version and instance of SQL Server 2005 no matter express no matter standard.. what ever it is uninstall it and then try installing 2000 first, then install 2005 and then 2008..

My friend's basic need was his office applications run on SQL server 2000, for development purpose he needs SQL server 2000, for learning he needs SQL server 2008, both worked side by side, if SQl 2000 is installed first and SQL Server 2008 is installed after that..

have fun guys.. take care.
